Results of the first week in the US Open Women’s Bracket
The current season is gradually coming to an end, and the start of the final tournament is not far off. But before that, there are still several major competitions and interesting matches, in particular the final fights of the last Grand Slam of this year – the US Open.
Only 87 years after the first match, the US Open received its familiar name. The first USOpen trophy was drawn as the US Men’s National Championship over 130 years ago – in 1881, respectively, in which only males were allowed to participate. Among women, the first tournament was held in 1887.
Norwegian, later American tennis player Anna Margarita “Molla” Bjurstedt Mallory holds the record for the number of finals won in New York. On account of her 8 titles in the women’s singles. All trophies were won between 1915 and 1926 (4 as Norwegian, 4 as American). If we take into account the results in the Open Era, here on this indicator the first line is shared by American Chris Evert and Serena Williams (6 titles each). It is noteworthy that the latter is still on the tour and can coolly impose a fight on any other tennis player.
Ours in New York
Three Ukrainian women took to the courts of the US Open this year. Unfortunately, not everyone managed to break into the top eight, but the fact that the representative of our country entered the ranks of the quarterfinalists pleasantly pleases the eye of the Ukrainian fan.
A funny situation with the participation of Lesya Tsurenko occurred before the start of the first round. Two tennis players at once, who were supposed to play against each other, refused to participate in the competition. First, the German woman Mona Bartel withdrew from the tournament. The Ukrainian athlete followed her example, arguing her refusal injury to the right elbow. Thus, Belgian Kirsten Flipkens and Chinese Wang Xiyu were lucky to take the places of Tsurenko and Bartel and play in the last Grand Slam tournament of the season. We wish Lesya a speedy recovery and look forward to her return to the court.
The first Ukrainian woman to leave the tournament, quite predictably, was Kateryna Kozlova , losing in the first round to the qualifier, American Taylor Townsend, who eventually made it to the 1/8 finals. For Katerina, this US Open was the fifth in her career. Her best indicator here is the second round.
Dayana Yastremskaya and Elina Svitolina very confidently overcame two starting rounds of the tournament. In the third round, the girls had to fight in Ukrainian derby . Elina and Dayana met each other on the court for the first time in history. A very promising sign for the Ukrainian fans who expected equal play from both girls, hoping that Yastremskaya could impose the fight on the first racket of Ukraine. Dayana has been playing very well lately. Getting one of the seeded in the Grand Slam tournament is perfect proof of this. But, alas, the fans did not wait for the fight. Elina Svitolina confirms the status of the first racket of the country and confidently enters the next round, giving her opponent only two games. Someone will say that the rain prevented Diana from showing a high-quality game, and to some extent she will be right, but nevertheless, the main reason for the failure of the 19-year-old Ukrainian woman was probably the lack of experience playing with such eminent tennis players as Elina Svitolina.
The match against Yastremska was not the last for the leader of Ukrainian tennis, in which Elina managed to win. In the fourth round, Svitolina and American Madison Keys played a ticket to the top eight. The level of tennis demonstrated by the Ukrainian in the match was as close to ideal as possible. Svitolina served splendidly throughout the match, and the percentage of goals won on the first serve was 92%. Having never given up to an opponent their own serve, the Ukrainian tennis prima confidently beats the tenth seeded tournament in two games. For Keys, the fourth round loss was Arthur Ashe’s first arena loss during the evening session. The first racket of Ukraine commented on her debut in the quarterfinals of the American Slam: “Today I served really well, I also worked with my legs very well, I am very pleased with how stable I played in this fight.”
Less than two months ago Elina raised the bar at the Grand Slam tournaments: the Wimbledon semi-finals. Don’t wait for the next major to set a new record. We need to act here and now. The whole country is holding our fists for our compatriot and we hope that in a few days the US Open-2019 trophy will be in the hands of a Ukrainian athlete.
A sign that did not live up to expectations
After the results of the draw, no one had any doubts that the match between the world tennis legends Russian Maria Sharapova and American Serena Williams was the central match of the first round. Indeed, an impressive signboard, both for the first round and for the entire tournament. Until last week, the last meeting of the girls took place in the quarterfinals of the US Open-2016. Agree, three years is a decent time to have time to miss the battles that Maria and Serena played on the court. And although, looking at the statistics of the tennis players’ personal meetings, we can see the total advantage of the American (19-3 before the match at the US Open), this did not matter at all last Monday. The tennis fans were looking forward to an interesting match and an equal fight. But, unfortunately, the promising sign did not live up to the expectations of neutral fans. Far from such a “zaruba” was presented in the match of such eminent rivals. The youngest of the Williams sisters did not notice Maria Sharapova on the court and very easily, in less than an hour, dealt with the Russian woman, giving her one game in each set. Who knows, but perhaps it is the current US Open that will go down in tennis history as the last tournament to host a match between Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams within its walls.
Sensation as an integral part of any Grand Slam tournament
Sensation is what piques the interest of a tennis fan when watching a Grand Slam tournament. It is hard to imagine that the Major could end without sensational overthrow of the WTA rankings leaders from their path through the tournament bracket. It has always been, is and will be.
Last week, tennis players, both from the top and bottom of the net, were presented with many surprises. Not a single girl from the leading four of the world rankings is seen in the quarterfinals, and only two of the top 10! Naomi Osaka, Ashley Barty and Karolina Plishkova, who occupy the podium in the WTA rankings, simultaneously stopped performing at the tournament after the fourth round. The Japanese failed to defend the title, while the Czech one – last year’s quarterfinals.
Petra Kvitova and Kiki Bertens left the tournament quite early, losing in the second and third rounds respectively. But the main sensation of the tournament is still the relegation in the second round of the fourth racket of the world – Romanian Simona Halep. In the most difficult three-set match, the leader of the Romanian tennis lost to the American Taylor Townsend (116 world number). Taylor chose the “serve + exit to the net” tactic and made the right decision. The American managed to avoid lengthy exchanges of blows on the back line and seize the key to success in the match. In total, Townsend made, attention, 106 (!) Outings to the grid during the match, of which 64 were crowned with success. An incredible figure for women’s tennis.
The second and third rounds are far from the result that was expected from the players of the top ten and one of the main contenders for victory in the tournament. Such a large number of sensational defeats of top players speaks of an unstable situation in the women’s tour.
Ashley Barty is the new old first racket of the world
In addition to the current first racket of the world, Naomi Osaka, three more tennis players flew to the States with the thought of the top of the world ranking: Ashley Barty, Karolina Plishkova and Simona Halep. The aforementioned elimination in the second round of Simona Halep narrowed the circle of contenders for the title of the first racket of the world at the end of the US Open early.
Based on the results of last year’s American Major, Australian Ashley Barty had the highest chances to lead the WTA rankings. In order to lose her dependence on her rivals, she needed to reach the final. But, as it turned out, the first racket of Australia did not have to reach such a far stage. Barty stumbled in the fourth round, after which Naomi Osaka and Karolina Plishkova followed suit, also leaving the tournament in the 1/8 finals.
Given the fact that last year Ashley left the tournament earlier than the Japanese and Czech, the Australian tennis player will again, after a short break, lead the world rankings from Monday.
American at home courts
Speaking about the American Helmet, one cannot fail to mention the results of tennis players who perform in their homeland. Home walls and a large number of domestic fans always give additional confidence to athletes playing in their home country and put a lot of pressure on opponents.
For many years, tennis players from the United States have regularly been listed among the main contenders for success in tournaments Grand Slam. The current US Open draw was no exception. 23 American women started in the main draw of the last Major of the season. Players such as Serena Williams, Madison Keys, Sloane Stevens and Sophia Kenin had a lot of support from the local public, who were counting on at least the girls’ far-off on the grid. But of this “fantastic four” and of all those who started in the first round, only Serena Williams managed to get into the top eight. Far from being the most successful American performance on home soil.
One of the last opportunities to get into the Top-8 at the end of the season
One of the priority tasks for tennis players holding leading positions in the WTA rankings is getting to the Final Tournament in Shenzhen, which will be held for the first time in this city and will start in a couple of months. The US Open is the last good opportunity to tighten up their positions in the championship race, and perhaps for someone the thought of participating in the Final Tournament serves as an additional motivation for a successful result at the last Helmet of the season.
For the leader of Ukrainian tennis, as no one else needs to play in China on October 28th. Otherwise Elina will be forced to lose 1500 points for last year’s triumph in Singapore.
Despite the fact that in the top eight, unexpectedly, there were only two tennis players from the top 10, the quarterfinal pairs turned out to be very interesting and intriguing. It is difficult to single out any athlete in each of the four matches, with the exception of the pair of Serena Williams – Wang Qiang. The American looks like a clear favorite here.
Undoubtedly, the eyes of the Ukrainian fans will be focused on the match with the participation of Elina Svitolina and Johanna Conta, which can rightfully be called the central confrontation of the round. Both girls demonstrate excellent play during the tournament, so this match is unlikely to be an easy walk for any of the tennis players. Bookmakers give preference to the Ukrainian tennis player in this match. They offer to bet on the success of Svitolina with the odds of 1.57, on the victory of the British – 2.38.
As for the top of the bracket, Belinda Bencic and Donna Vekic and Bianca Andreescu and Alice Mertens will compete for the right to form the second semi-final pair. Here I would like to note the 19-year-old Canadian Andreescu, who from the very start of the tournament played the role of a “dark horse” and coped with her task. To reach the quarterfinals of the Grand Slam tournament at such a young age is worth a lot. Alice Mertens is a tennis player who can beat the Canadian and book herself a place in the final four.
The last Major of the season reaches the home stretch and only a few hours are left before the main matches of the US Open. Three victorious matches separate one of the eight remaining tennis players from winning the main trophy of the American series. We believe that this Saturday our athlete, the pride of the country, Elina Svitolina, will lift the US Open Champion Cup over her head.
