Grandmaster result: 300 wins by 23
There are 300 wins! Elina Svitolina on Saturday, March 10, reached the mark of 300 victories in her adult professional career. This includes not only the WTA competition, but also the ITF and the Federation Cup. The jubilee success fell on the second round match of a major Premier Mandatory tournament in Indian Wells. Svitolina won 6: 4, 6: 3 against Mona Bartel and is now preparing for a meeting with Spaniard Carla Suarez-Navarro. At a press conference, journalists congratulated the Ukrainian woman on her victory, and she herself recalled the first match at the WTA level: “I really wanted to win that meeting!” . We are talking about the match with Elena Dokic in the first round of qualifying for the tournament in Paris in 2011. Svitolina lost in three sets, after which she had to wait a little over a year for her debut success at the WTA level.
Serena Williams is in the lead by the number of victories among the active tennis players – she won 783rd on Saturday, and ten Samantha Stosur closes with 562. In this rating, Eline, of course, is still quite far from the top 10, but experience decides everything. Only two tennis players from this list are not 30 years old – Caroline Wozniacki and Agnieszka Radwanska. Svitolina, we recall, is only 23. At the same time, she is only eight victories behind Garbinier Mugurusa, who is older and higher in the ranking.
Svitolina continues to progress
It is noteworthy that the jubilee victories are also very important for the Ukrainian woman. She achieved her 100th success in July 2013 in Baku in a match with Donna Vekich. If not for this victory, then Svitolina would have won her debut title in some other city. Yes, two days after she beat Vekic 6: 2, 6: 3, Elina lifted the cup over her head for the first time. Then the Ukrainian was only 18 years old, and she became the first teenager of the 2013 season to win the WTA tournament. “I worked very hard before this competition, and I am glad that all these efforts have led to a result. Thanks to all residents of Baku for their support. I hope to see you next year! “, – said Svitolina at that awards ceremony.
A year later, the Ukrainian woman really met the Azerbaijani audience and won the title again. The second WTA trophy was again in Baku. Elina won her 200th career victory in Kuala Lumpur in 2016. It was the final against Eugenie Bouchard, which was not easy to develop. Nevertheless, Svitolina prevailed with a score of 6: 7 (5), 6: 4, 7: 5, and at that time won her 200th professional match. Then, two years ago, a Ukrainian woman stated that her goal was to enter the top 10. How can this be achieved? “The key to winning is believing in yourself and your dreams. We need to work to make them come true. Someday everything will work out. You need to work hard and believe in success “, – said Elina. Thus, from the first victory (the ITF tournament in Kharkov in October 2008, 6: 3, 6: 3 over compatriot Valentina Ivakhnenko) to the 100th, the Ukrainian went for 4.5 years, from the 100th to the 200th – a little more than 2.5 years, and from 200th to 300th – just over two years. It is quite logical that Elina gets to each next anniversary mark faster – she continues to progress and win, or at least reach the final stages more and more often.
Good chances to rise in the ranking
Why will the 300th success be important in her career anyway? Of course, the Indian Wells tournament may not turn out very well, but the 300th victory came in a week of triumph at Tie Break Tens in New York. This is an unofficial competition, so, of course, the results do not go into statistics. However, the tournament is becoming more and more popular in the tennis world. Elina had to play three matches in a day with difficult opponents – Venus Williams, Coco Vandevey and Zhang Shuai. The Ukrainian showed excellent tennis and won with a total score of 30-6 (each match is played in a long tie-break format with up to 10 points won). The competition has been held since 2015 (at first only men have played, and since 2017, women have also played), and Svitolina became the first tennis player in both categories to win the match dry – 10-0. This is how her duel with Vandeweghe ended.
Elina moved from the East Coast of the USA to the West in a good mood and continued her winning streak, now in classic tennis. We will not count those three victories in New York, and taking into account the title in Dubai, Svitolina has not lost for five meetings. The chances of reaching at least the fourth round are very high: at least two months ago, Elina beat Suarez-Navarro very convincingly on the Brisbane hard. In general, now the Ukrainian woman has a good time to gain points. A year ago at Indian Wells, she lost quite early in the third game. In Miami, Elina completely lost in the first meeting. Thus, the chances are high not only to protect last year’s points, but also to seriously add.
Celebrate 300 Victory by Watching a Good Movie
After Miami, Svitolina, like many leading tennis players, is going to take a short break before the start of the clay series. The schedule for this part of the season is almost completely the same the 2017 schedule. Then Elina played in Istanbul, Madrid and Rome, now Istanbul will be replaced by the more prestigious Stuttgart – both competitions take place in the same week. On the ground, it will not be possible to relax in terms of protecting points: last season the Ukrainian won in Istanbul, won Rome and reached the quarterfinals of Roland Garros, that is, she showed excellent results. However, now Elina occupies the fourth place in the ranking, she is a top athlete, so everyone, in principle, is expecting at least semi-finals from her.
Judging by the results, Svitolina is quite comfortable in this status. Now the Ukrainian got a day of rest and can celebrate her 300th victory. How will she do it? Apparently, in front of a TV, laptop or tablet. On Twitter, she asked her followers which movie or series she should watch. Various proposals immediately poured in, leading among which is “Black Mirror” – an anthology series about the influence of modern technologies on our lives. We wish Elina a good rest, and on Monday to open her fourth hundred victories.
